40mm Autocannon

The 40mm Autocannon is a Mounted Weapon that can be installed on to a Trampler's weapon mount points. It comes in four variants and offers a high fire rate, large ammunition reserves, and ease of use in a wide range of situations. This comes in exchange for having reduced effectiveness in extreme situations compared to other more specialized weapons.
The autocannon fires 40mm Shells which feed directly from the weapon's ammunition reserves. As such it does not need to reload, instead utilizing a heat buildup system. Firing will add heat to the weapon which is displayed in a meter next to the crosshair, showing how much heat has built up in the weapon. The autocannon will passively dissipate heat at a constant rate, but sustained fire will add heat faster than the weapon can dissipate by itself, slowly filling the heat meter over time. If this meter fills up all the way, the weapon will overheat, making it unable to fire for a period of time while it cools down.
The autocannon is a generalist weapon and is able to apply itself decently well in most situations with very few downsides. Of the few downsides the weapon has, the most important to note would be its less than stellar accuracy.
One situation that the autocannon excels in is mobile combat with other tramplers (although it is more accurate to say that mobile combat negatively affects the weapon noticeably less than other mounted weapons). Where the 80mm Naval Cannon requires precise shooting to be effective (which can be difficult when shooting at another trampler while in motion), the autocannon can afford to miss a few shots here and there and still be relatively effective. Similarly, where the 70mm Shotgun Cannon is able to deal high damage at close range, tramplers in motion may not give you the luxury of fighting at close range in the first place, making its usefulness situational. The autocannon can maintain its effectiveness well past the furthest reaches of the 70mm Shotgun Cannon.
It can also be used to suppress crew either on deck or on the ground at close range, but lacks the raw killing power of the 70mm Shotgun Cannon in a similar situation.

Tier 4 - Experimental

A modified trigger mechanism, experimentation with materials and a little barrel cooling system wizardry, and a regular twin-barreled anti- aircraft gun gained the ability to increase its combat rate of fire from its own heating during firing. Be careful: watch the temperature!
Special ability: Gains fire rate as it heats up
