Sophie is an inhabited planet within the SAND universe, originally colonized by the Austro-Hungarian Empire during its early era of interplanetary expansion in an alternate version of 1910. The planet was renowned for its abundant water resources and played a crucial role in sustaining human settlements beyond Earth.

Pre-Disaster Environment

Before the catastrophe, over ninety percent of Sophie’s surface was covered by vast oceans. Human habitation was constructed primarily on elevated platforms and islands, with docks and harbors encircling nearly every settlement. Maritime travel and trade dominated daily life, and the planet’s economy revolved around aquatic resource extraction and hydro-energy production.

The Ecological Collapse

A mysterious ecological disaster abruptly transformed Sophie’s environment. The once-blue world was stripped of its oceans, leaving behind endless dunes and desolate salt dunes. The cause of this transformation remains unknown, though theories range from energy-harvesting accidents to large-scale atmospheric interference. The rapid desertification forced most colonists to abandon the planet, leaving behind the remnants of their elevated structures now half-buried relics in the sand.

In the present day, Sophie stands as a haunting monument to humanity’s ambition and hubris. A world where the skeletons of ships and docks rest on dry land, and the winds carry the memory of a vanished sea.
